Craniosacral Therapy is a whole body treatment that originates with the craniosacral system. It uses very gentle touch to tune into the rhythm of your cerebro-spinal fluid and follow the restrictions in your body until they release.
What does Craniosacral Therapy feel like?
Some people don’t feel much throughout a craniosacral therapy appointment other than the weight of the therapist’s hands. Other people feel warm or cold sensations. Stretching, tingling, bubbling, and waves are other sensations that have been described during appointments. There are no expectations, as each experience is different.
How does Craniosacral Therapy work?
Craniosacral therapy is a hands-on treatment that addresses the body as a whole by focusing on the craniosacral system. It is a very gentle form of Cranial Osteopathy and is meant to relieve tension within the dural system.
Our entire brain and spinal cord is bathed in fluid which is surrounded by a membrane like a water balloon. Our bodies are continually producing and absorbing this fluid, but not at the same rate. This creates a subtle rhythm that can be felt anywhere in the body.
Fluctuations in this rhythm can indicate where there are tension patterns or restrictions in the body. Then, with approximately 5 grams of pressure (the weight of a nickel, or the weight you might touch your eye with while inserting contact lenses), the therapist gently follows the tissues of the body through their tension patterns to facilitate their release.
Who can benefit from Craniosacral Therapy?
The whole family can benefit from Craniosacral Therapy. Because it’s so gentle, it can be used on those who are pregnant, infants, adults in chronic pain, and geriatrics.
Within my practice, craniosacral therapy has been reported as helpful for migraines, post-concussion treatment, nausea, dizziness, vertigo, digestive disturbances, neck and shoulder tension, pelvic pain, TMJ dysfunction, infant feeding, oral tethers, fibromyalgia, and chronic injury and pain.
What does Craniosacral Therapy do?
One of my Craniosacral teachers always told us that the worst thing that could happen during a craniosacral session was nothing… and she’s never seen nothing happen.
At the very least, clients leave feeling a lot more relaxed and able to breathe deeper. Some clients have pain disappear and skeletal imbalances rebalance within a session.
Each appointment is different and each experience is different.
